SALT is one of the basic and the most favourite ingredient in food. It is around 40% sodium and 60% chloride. It is commonly used in food to add to it's flavor or to preserve them for a longer period.

Salt is necessary for our body as it does many important functions in the body like deepana(increase digestive strength), pachana(carminative), kledana(imparts moistness to body), rochaka(improves taste), kapha praseka janaka(liquefies kapha dosha), margan vishodhyati(cleans micro channels). 

Salt isn't always the villan in the story of our lives but excess salt definitely is. You need a small amount of salt daily to remain healthy. 

This article discusses about the effects of ingesting too much salt both in short-term and long-term. 

Short-term effects of eating too much salt

You can certainly expect a salt(sodium) overload when you head out for a pizza treat or order that extra large bucket of popcorn flooded with extra butter at the movie night. But the tragedy is that, salt carves its way into your diet from unexpected sources like bread or cereal(which do not seem to be salty at all).

Immediate consequences of that evil food wrapped in disguise of tasty seeming flavor are a few. 

Water Retention 

It is because your kidneys wish to maintain a balance between sodium and water(i.e. sodium-to-water ratio) in the body. To do so, the excess sodium intake(through salty diet) is compensated by extra amount of water.

You may have noticed that you feel more bloated and puffy than usual. It may also result in swelling, especially in the hands and feet which ultimately cause you to weigh more than usual.

You must have probably experienced the thirst to have a glass of water after munching upon a chunk of salty fries or after enjoying the popcorn at the movie theater. 

Encouraging you to drink water, after having excess salt is a body's attempt to maintain sodium-to-salt ratio.

Bloating

When you overdo with the salt intake, your stomach may balloon out. A study in the American Journal of Gastroenterology revealed that bloating which is characterized by a gas build-up and discomfort in the stomach, was more frequent in those who ate a high-sodium diet. 

On the other hand, a low-sodium diet resulted in fewer complaints of bloat.

Sleep disturbance 

Excess salt intake disturbs your sleep patterns. A study in Endocrine Abstracts showed that adding too much salt in your diet results in later bedtimes, inability in sleeping through the night and frequent nightmares. 

The fluid retention due to excess sodium intake, makes it difficult and uncomfortable to lie down at night(especially for those with sleep apnoea).

Raised blood pressure 

A salty meal cause a larger volume of blood to flow through your blood vessels. This may result in temporary rise in blood pressure. 

But this could not be true for everyone, as not every person is the same. It depends on factors like genetics and harmones. Ageing and obesity can also be a part in amplifying the blood pressure.

Long-term effects

Acharya CHARAKA in chapter-26 of CHARAKA SAMHITA, described the long-term effects of having a salty diet.

Excess intake of salt causes increase in PITTA and KAPHA dosha leading to following effects:
•pitta prakopa- increase and imbalance of pitta
•daryati- causes erosion
•kushnati mansani- depletion of muscle tissue
•pragalayati kushtani- sloughing of skin diseases 
•visham vardhayati- aggravates poison effects and symptoms
•shophan sphotayati- opens up swellings
•vali- grey hairs
•palita- facial wrinkles
•khalitya- hair loss
•raktapitta- bleeding disorders due to high pitta levels
•amlapitta- gastritis
•visarpa- herpes
•vatarakta- gout
•vicharchika- worsens eczema
•indralupta- hair loss, alopecia

Salts in AYURVEDA

1. SAINDHAVA LAVANA- rock salt
2. SOUVARCHALA LAVANA- black salt or sochal salt
3. VIDA LAVANA- type of black salt(sodium sulphate) 
4. SAMUDRA LAVANA- common salt
5. SAMBHARA LAVANA- earthern salt

What to do if you've had too much salt? 

There are a few ways in which you can help your body compensate for the excess salt intake.

FIRSTLY, make sure you drink a sufficient amount of water. So your body can re-establish the desired sodium-to-water ratio.

SECONDLY, try eating foods that are rich in potassium, such as fruits (oranges, bananas, apricots, grapefruits),  vegetables (cooked spinach, cooked broccoli, potatoes, sweet potatoes, mushrooms), legumes (kidney beans, soybeans, lentils) , nuts(hazel nuts, almonds, brazil nuts), seeds(watermelon seeds, squash seeds, flax seeds, hemp seeds),  and diary (yogurt, whole milk, low-fat milk, cheese) . Potassium will maintain your body's fluid balance.

FINALLY, reduce the amount of salt intake in consecutive meals. Focus on consuming more fresh food.

Bottom line 

Consuming too much salt can affect your body in a range of ways. In the short-term, it may cause water retention, excessive thirst, bloating, sleep disturbances, rise in blood pressure, puffiness, frequent urination. In severe cases it may even cause hypernatremia and if left untreated can prove to be fatal. 

In the long run, high salt diet cause raktapitta, amlapitta, visarpa, vatarakta, vicharchika, indralupta, and even premature death. 

Some people may be affected more severely than others by high sodium(salt) diets. To compensate for the high salt meal, try to drink more amount of water, eat foods rich in potassium and reduce the salt intake in the consecutive meals. 

So, the next time someone offers you a  bucket of popcorn or salty fries
think twice before you accept. 



All over internet, people are preaching and trying to warn about the lifestyle disorders, that has shown a hike in prevalence in the last few decades. 


It's important to talk about it because it is really dangerous. And its important to keep your body protected with a shield of good lifestyle practices and defeat the demon of disorders. 

You must be wandering that why every other person is taking or writing about lifestyle disorders or simply focussing on it. 

Let me answer with the help of an example, when a person tells you something, you won't believe it just like that. May be you'll hear it and just delete the thing from your brain. Or may be you don't find it that important and relevent,  so automatically you don't give the required attention to it. But if the same thing is told to you, multiple times by different people you pay attention to it and think it over. Just like that if you read or hear about the lifestyle disorders you'll think about abstaining the incorrect lifestyle, without being noticing it. 

There's another perspective to it, these disorders are so treacherous that everyone is trying to give you a warning signal. 

Either you alter your style of life or your lifestyle will alter you.


DEFINING IT
Lifestyle disorders, a disease associated with the way people live their lives. Or these are the ailments that are due to the day to day habits and routines of the people.



Habit that detrack people from everyday activities and push them to a sedantary lifestyle and land them into a place where they find themselves diseased.


CULPRITS BEHIND IT (CAUSES) 
Faulty DIET and LIFESTYLE CHANGES are the main culprits to develop the lifestyle disorders such as obesity, coronary heart diseases, dyslipidaemia, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, anaemia and some mental disorders. 

Drug abuse, tobbacco smoking and alcohol drinking as well as a lack of or too much exercise may also increase the risk of developing certain diseases, especially later in life. 

These non - communicable diseases(NCDs). These are commonly caused by lack of physical activity, unhealthy eating, alcohol, drugs and smoking. 

During the latter half of the 20th century, people developed sedentary lifestyle and greater rates of obesity.NCDs kill around 40 million people each year, that is around 70% of all the deaths globally. These are chronic in nature. 

Adults can develop lifestyle disorders through behavioural factors that impact on them. These can be unemployment, unsafe life, poor socio - economic environment, working conditions, stress and home life can change a person's lifestyle to increase their risk of developing one of these disease.




AYURVEDIC INSIGHT



When the control and coordination of physical and sensory activities are disturbed, it leads to the derangement of lifestyle and results in any lifestyle disorder. Ayurveda narrated this phenomenon as 'PRAJYAPRADHA'  (intellectual blasphemy) which is one of the three basic cause of any disease.

  • habit of supressing the natural urges
  • forcibly attending the urges
  • doing the daring(साहसिक) acts more than one's own capacity
  • practising improper diet and lifestyle despite knowing the proper one's 

These are the fundamental causes of disease causation described in ayurvedic texts.


SHIELD TO DEFEND YOURSELF 
Prevention are remedies or activities that aim to reduce the likelihood of a disease or disorder affecting people.

If the lifestyle is altered before occurence of any disease or disorder, it will automatically prevent it's onset. 

Prevention can be done in many aspects :

-Through DIET
  • avoid excess use of dairy products and oily foods. 
  • avoid alcoholic beverages and tobacco
  • avoidance of junk food
  • limit consumption of sugary products
  • food should be taken depending upon the digestive capacity

-Through LIFESTYLE CHANGES
  • following daily regimen, seasonal regimen and night routine
  • drinking lukewarm water just after waking up in the morning
  • practising yoga or any other physical exercise
  • practising massage with medicated oil
  • undergo seasonal purificatory procedures i.e. PANCHAKARMA


-Through MENTAL FACTORS
  • positive thinking
  • do well for others
  • follow ACHARA RASAYANA(code of conduct) 
  • SADVRITTA PALANA(following righteous things)

The best thing about lifestyle disorders is that they are reversible by fine tuning the lifestyle. 

Ayurveda provides a long list of methods for management of lifestyle disorders:
  • DINCHARYA(daily regimen) 
  • RITUCHARYA(seasonal regimen) 
  • SADVRITTA PALANA(following ideal routines) 
  • ACHARA RASAYANA(code of conduct) 
  • RASAYANA THERAPIES(rejuvenation therapies) 
  • PANCHAKARMA(five detoxification or purification therapies) 

The inclusive utilization of all these treatment modalities has a great effect on lifestyle disorders. 

Moreover, the application of organ-specific rasayana herbs also provide enough scope not only for prevention of diseases, but also for the promotion of health and cure of diseases too. 


DEATH STATISTICS IN INDIA
According to a report published by    ICMR (Indian Council of Medical Research)in 2017, 3 of the 5 leading individual causes of disease burden in India were non-communicable. 


Of all the total deaths, from major disease groups 62% of all deaths were caused by non-communicable diseases. 


CONCLUSION
Lifestyle disorders are a result of what we eat and what we think. Good balanced diet and mental equilibrium are necessary to lead a disease free life. Concept of Ayurveda and Yoga, if practised together it can make tremendous changes in the spectrum of health.

It seems like we love to pair things up. Isn't it true?

But are all these combinations really a match made in heaven? Ask your self and think again. 

We combine things on a daily basis, sometimes for experimenting, sometimes just for the sake of our curiosity, and some other times just to see what happens. Yes!! You heard it right! But our match making can lead us to land somewhere being diseased. 

In this article, we'll look upon some DIETETIC INCOMPATIBILITIES and there effects on our health. Food - food interactions, food - processing interactions are other aspects, that we'll look upon. 


DEFINING IT

According to one of the encyclopedia of AYURVEDA- THE CHARAKA SAMHITA "the substances or matter(द्रव्य) that have qualities which are opposite to the qualities of our body(शरीर) and bodily tissues(शरीर  धातु) are called VIRUDDHA AHARA.

               'देहधातुप्रत्यनीकभूतानि द्रव्याणि देहधातुभिर्विरोधमोपद्यन्ते।' (च. सु. २६/८१ )






The food which is combined inappropriately, which has gone through wrong processing, which is consumed in inaccurate dose, which is consumed at wrong time of the day and in wrong season can become viruddha ahara. 

The dictionary meaning of viruddha is opposite and ahara is food. So, they together mean that the food or food combinations which have properties opposite to the bodily constitution.





PHYSIOLOGY BEHIND DISEASE CAUSATION

The food substances (आहार द्रव्य) and drugs (औषध द्रव्य) that aggravate any of the dosha or a pair or a group of doshas but they do not expel them out of the body.

'यत्  किञ्चिद् दोषमास्रावय न निर्हरति कायत:। आहारजातं तत् सर्वमहितायोपपद्यते।'(च. सु. २६/८५)

CATEGORIZING IT

1. DESHA VIRUDHHA (place incompatibility) 
In coastal areas, having food that is snigdha(smooth), sheeta(cool).

In dry regions, having food that is ruksha(dry), teekshna(incisive).


2. KALA VIRUDHHA (climatic incompatibility) 
In winters, having food with qualities like sheetal(cool), ruksha(dry).

Ice-creams in winter season.

In summers, having food with qualities like katu rasa(pungent taste),ushana veerya(warm potency).


3. AGNI VIRUDDHA (digestive fire incompatibility) 
If the agni (digestive fire) is manda(decreased) then too the person is having guru(heavy) food.

Large heavy meals at night. 


4. MATRA VIRUDDHA (dose incompatibility) 
Having madhu(honey)and ghee in equal quantity. 


5. SATMYA VIRUDDHA (habit incompatibility)
If the person is not used to having kshaya rasa(astringent) food and then he/she suddenly starts having it. 


6. DOSHA VIRUDDHA (humor incompatibility)
Having food which has qualities similiar to any of the dosha vata, pitta and kapha.

7. SAMSKAR VIRUDDHA(processing incompatibility) 
Heating the madhu(honey).

Potato chips, pickles, fish dahi bhata.


8. VEERYA VIRUDDHA (potency incompatibility) 
Milk and fish taken together. 

Eating ice-cream with hot chocolate fudge.


9. KOSHTHA VIRUDDHA (bowel incompatibility)
People who have mridu koshtha(soft bowel) giving them food which is highly purgative.


10. AWASTHA VIRUDDHA (condition incompatibility)
Giving food items which are guru(difficult to digest) to obese person. 

People who are highly active, having food items which are laghu(easily digestible). 


11. KRAMA VIRUDDHA (order incompatibility) 
Having food without attending the urges. 

Consuming food before the earlier food is digested.


12. PARIHAR VIRUDHHA (regimen incompatibility) 
Having ushana veerya (warm potency) items after eating pork. 

Cold water after hot tea.


13. UPCHARA VIRUDDHA (exemption incompatibility)
Drinking cold water after having ghrit(ghee).


14. PAKA VIRUDDHA (cooking incompatibility)
Eating overcooked or undercooked food.


15. SAMYOG VIRUDDHA (combination incompatibility) 
Having milk and amla (sour) food together. 

Fruit salad, cheese fruit, milk with banana.

16. HRIDYA VIRUDDHA (mental incompatibility)
Eating food not liked by the person.


17. SAMAPADA VIRUDDHA
Eating over ripen and under ripen fruit. 


18. VIDDHI VIRUDDHA (procedure incompatibility) 
Not following the viddhi(procedure) of having food.

  • BLINDNESS

EXCEPTIONS

Viruddha ahara consumption is a root cause of a number of diseases but there are some exceptions and conditions on which it does not have any effect or it does not cause any diseases in the following conditions :

'सात्म्यतोअल्पतया वाअपि दीप्ताग्नेस्तरुणस्य च। स्निग्धव्यायामबालिनां विरूद्धं वितथं भवेत।'(च. सु. २६/१०६)


- people who are used to consume it.
- consume it in small quantity. 
- have good digestive fire. 
- people who consume ghee and oil everyday. 
- people who exercise daily. 
- people who are strong. 





WRONG EATING HABITS IN PRESENT ERA

  • eating when not hungry.
  • eating soon after having meal.
  • eating at the wrong time of the day.
  • eating hurriedly.
  • emotional eating.
  • over eating.
  • eating too much, too little.
  • eating food one can't digest.
  • eating when constipated.
  • eating too spicy, sour, salty food.
  • having frozen food.
  • eating preserved and stale food.
  • drinking cold or chilled water (especially during a meal).
  • too much water or no water at all during a meal.

CONCLUSION

Anything that affects the physiology of the body can lead to pathology i.e. abnormal state of body. Ahara plays an important role in nourishment of body as well as mind. Various methods are given in AYURVEDIC TEXTS to maintain health and diseased person to be cured.

Therefore, for a good health person should always eat wholesome food and avoid viruddha ahara (incompatible diet) because food itself is a termed as mahabhaishajya and play an important role to treat illness and maintain health.
