When people think of coffee they usually picturise something that'll boast their energy, help them stay awake and concentrate.

When someone needs some sleepless hours at night or energy booster in the morning, their favorite get away is coffee.

Despite what you have heard, there are there are plenty of good things to be said about coffee. It's high in anti-oxidants and linked to a reduced risk of many diseases like liver cancer, type-2 diabetes, heart failure and inflammatory bowel disease. There are many researches that provide evidence to support the results.

Worldwide experts estimate that people consume around 2.25 billion cups of coffee per day.

This article takes a detailed look at coffee and it's health effects and also why you should resist yourself from having coffee. And some reasons for having a hot cup of brewed coffee with some chocolate syrup pour on it.

Coffee contains a no. of useful nutrients, including riboflavin(vitamin B-2), niacin(vitamin B-3), magnesium, potassium, and various phenolic compound.

On the other hand, it is a stimulant, bitter(tikta) and euphoriant. Coffee provokes all the 3 doshas VATA, PITTA and KAPHA. Highly addictive, it is a digestive irritant and adrenal stimulant.

Coffee is a potent factor provoking vata. Vata or vata-pitta individuals run on adrenal energy, a tendency coffee serves to exacerbate. Coffee pulls on the reserve energy of the kidneys and adrenals, putting the body into biological debt.

5 benefits of drinking coffee

Health benefits of enjoying a hot cup of coffee or cold mug with some ice includes:

  • protective against type-2 diabetes, Parkinson's disease, liver diseases, and liver cancer.
  • promotion of healthy heart and a long life.
  • stimulates brain function and boosts metabolism.
  • protection against Alzheimer's disease.
  • lower risk of depression and suicide.

It is also true that when people consume caffeine regularly they become tolerant to it. Either it stops working as it did, or a larger dose is needed to produce the same effect.

Caffeine is an addictive substance. It can lead to tolerance and well-documented withdrawal symptoms like headaches, tirednedd, and irritability.

This apparently looking tempting drink, has some dark secrets hidden in it's flavour:

•Caffeine is actually a defense chemical
Caffeine produced by coffee plant is actually a form of defense mechanism used by the plant. It is a poison that paralyses and kills the insect that eat its seed. It also kills the plants that are growing nearby to provide the coffee plant with gnoreater access to sunlight and space.

Coffee beans are only called 'beans'because of the resemblance-they're actually berries.

•Coffee puts the body into energy debt
As per ayurveda, coffee causes the energy in the body to move upwards(udana vayu) and outwards(vyana vayu), depleting the body of the sustenance and nourishment of the ojas(ultimate tissue of the body according to ayurveda). This depleting energy sends the nervous system(especially brain) into a fight or flight mode. Thus increasing the body's reability on it.

•After just 1 cup of coffee fight or flight mode is activated for 3 weeks
3weeks! Yess! The brain capacity is reduced to that of a prehistoric man since the limbic system is turned all the way on. Brain is bio-chemically hallucinated to believe that the body is in a danger situation by the sympathetic nervous system.
This is the reason why the so called modern and coffee addicted society suffer anxiety and nervous system disorder.

•Coffee might be an obstruction in weight loss
Coffee promotes retention of sodium ions in the body which in turn is a reason of increased amount of water retention in the body.
This may also be a reason of substantial weight gain.

Despite the fact that caffeine is a mild diuretic, you don't lose more fluid than you take in by drinking coffee, so it cannot dehydrate you.

•Coffee can be a reason for ill mental health
A study in the year 2016 concluded that a high intake of caffeine during adolescence can lead to permanent changes in the brain.

Just the smell of coffee can help you wake up in the morning.

If you don't like a cup of coffee, there are not much evidences for it's beneficial effects for you to start having one. But if you like it, then it's time for you to ponder upon the reasons of not stopping having it.

WHAT WILL YOU DECIDE TO HAVE IT OR NOT TO HAVE IT?? CHOICE IS YOURS!!

Scorching heat, perspiration, heat waves, hot days, short nights.SUMMER HAS ARRIVED!!!

Summer one of the four seasons of the year. And definitely the hottest of them all. In this article we'll discuss the way to protect ourselves from the heat this summer. This is where Ayurvedic Ritucharya steps in. Ritucharya (seasonal regimen) is described in ayurvedic texts that serves the purpose of being healthy throughout the year. While this idea may first seem daunting, but a few simple changes can dramatically increase your health and vitality.

In this article, we'll discuss the following aspects:
  • Grishma ritu(summer season) and it's effect
  • General condition in Grishma Ritu(summer season)
  • State of Bala(strength)
  • Dietary regimen/Ahara(food) to have
  • Lifestyle regimen/Vihar(activities) to do
GRISHMA RITU AND IT'S EFFECT

Grishma Ritu(summer season) is a part of UTTARAYANA(northern solstice).Uttarayana indicates the assent of the sun or northward movement of the sun.In this period, the sun and the wind are powerful. It is also called Adanakala because the sun takes away the strength of the people and the cooling quality of the earth.

            UTTARAYANA(northern solstice)

GENERAL CONDITION IN GRISHMA RITU

MONTHS:Mid-may to Mid-july(approximately)

MANSA(hindu calendar months):Jyestha to Asadha

In this season, sun rays absorbs the water content from all organism and things. The water bodies dry up and the plants appear lifeless.

The rasa(taste) that is predominant in vegetation of summer season or crops is KATU(pungent).

The mahabhoot(elements) predominant are AGNI and VAYU. The deposition of Vata dosha  increases and the Kapha dosha is pacified. Agni(digestive fire) of the person remains mild. These are the sole reasons of diseases and digestive problems in grishma(summer).

STATE OF BALA(strength)

Grishma ritu is marked by alpa bala(little strength or feeble). And it is least in the whole year.

AHARA TO HAVE(dietary regimen)

During the grishma ritu, our bodies naturally crave light foods and small meals that are easy to digest because the agni(digestive fire) disperses in order to help us keep cool. Summer is a time to favor the madhur(sweet), tikta(bitter), kashaya(astringent) and to relish cool, liquid even slightly oily foods.

It is the best time to appreciate the taste of fresh fruits and salads. In the way of beverages to beat the heat, enjoy room temperature water infused with mint or lime and a little raw sugar, a sweet lassi etc. Iced drinks are best avoided; they disturb the digestive fire and create toxins in the body. Also, they hamper the thermoregulation(temperature regulation) of the body. Try to avoid extremely spicy foods like chillies. Also, remember that raw vegetables(as in salads) will be better digested if eaten at lunch rather than dinner.

FRUITS TO MUNCH ON:
  • Apples
  • Avocados
  • Berries
  • Cherries
  • Coconut

  • Melons
  • Pears

  • Plum
  • Guava
  • Falsa
  • Litchi
  • Pomegranate

VEGETABLES TO HAVE:

  • Cabbages
  • Cauliflower
  • Cucumbers
  • Green Beans
  • Lettuce
  • Okra
  • Potatoes
  • Tomatoes
  • Brinjal
  • Pumpkin

CEREALS TO EAT:

  • Rice
  • Wheat
  • Barley
OILS TO COOK:
  • Coconut oil
  • Sunflower oil
BEVERAGES TO HAVE:
  • Milk
  • Mattha(whey)
  • Mand(rice water)
  • Shikanji(lemonade)
  • Sharbat
ANIMAL PRODUCTS TO FAVOR(if you eat them):
  • Fish(freshwater)
  • Poultry(white)
  • Shrimp
Use spices like Hing, Jeera, Ajwain for better digestion.
Avoid regular consumption of curd, as it is sour in taste and blocks the minute channels in the body thus hampering digestion.

In summers, alcohol consumption is a big NO according to Ayurveda.
But if you are habitual, drink in small quantity. Also, you can add twice the amount of water to the drink.
It would be great if you avoid having alcohol in any form.

Lifestyle choices

Wake up as early as possible in the morning (preferably before sunrise). Before bathing, massage your skin with soothing oil like coconut oil, lavender oil or any other essential oil to calm your nerves and cool your body.

Wear light, breathable, soft clothing made of cotton, silk, khadi etc. As they will allow your body to breathe and counter the heat. Also choose colours like white, grey, blue, pastles or any other lighter shades, as they absorb less heat.

In ayurvedic texts, it is allowed to have an afternoon nap only in summers as it is beneficial to restore the energy. In the evening before going to bed, massage your feet with oil like brahmi after washing and drying them.

In summer season, according to ayurvedic acharyas EXERCISE IS A BIG NO. As the energy levels are low and exercising will further deplete them. Hey, all the fitness freaks out there don't be disheartened, as you can do yoga and light exercise. But just remember to exercise less than 50% of your capacity. You can do pranayamas(breathing exercises) as well.

A MOON WALK

It is advised to sleep in the moonlight. If not possible just have a walk in the moonlight. As it cools the body down and soothes it. Also it regulates blood flow in the body.

Accessorizing

You can accessorize yourself with jewels like silver, pearl or even a tulsi mala as these have a cooling effect on our body.

You can also put some chandan on your forehead, as it'll help you to calm your nerves and fight the heat.

Grab all that you need and get started to fight that heat out there!!

Ayurveda is a combination of 2 words 'AYU' meaning 'life' and 'VEDA' meaning 'science'. Therefore the word itself represents 'SCIENCE OF LIFE'. It is a part of 'ATHARVAVEDA' (one of the four Veda).

According to an ancient ayurvedic text 'CHARAKA SAMHITA', ayurveda is where good, bad, happy, unhappy life and its promoters and non- promoters, its measure and nature is dealt with.

Ayurveda has a holistic definition of health that includes body, mind, soul, and senses. Unlike other medical systems, ayurveda focuses more on preventing the disease rather than curing it. It is one of the main objectives of ayurveda.

              स्वस्थस्य स्वास्थ्य रक्षणं आतुरस्य विकार प्रशमनं च ।(चरक संहित सूत्र ३०।२६)

According to Ayurvedic principles, every person has its own unique personality just as a person has its own unique fingerprints. Therefore, the healing system should also be personalized.

Ang (Branches) of Ayurveda

Ashtang Ayurveda refers to the eight limbs or branches of Ayurveda:
  1. Kayachikitsa (Internal Medicine)
  2. Shalya Tantra (Surgery)
  3. Shalakya Tantra (ENT)
  4. Kaumara Bhritya (Pediatrics)
  5. Agada Tantra (Toxicology)
  6. Bhuta Vidya (Psychology)
  7. Rasayana (Science of rejuvenation)
  8. Vajikarana (Aphrodisiac Therapy)

THREE PRINCIPLE ENERGIES OF THE BODY

According to Ayurveda the entire cosmos is an interplay of five elements, the Panchamahabhoot - Aakash (space or ether), Vayu (air), Agni (fire), Jala (water) and Prithvi (earth). So are the Vata, Pitta and Kapha

As described in Ayurvedic samhitas (texts) a person is fundamentally constituted by three doshas (entities) Vata, Pitta and Kapha. Every person has different percentages of these doshas, that constitutes the  unique prakriti (nature) of that person. That is why, every prescription is a personalized one.

Vata is the energy of movement; Pitta is the energy of digestion or metabolism and Kapha the energy of lubrication of structure..

  • Vata - composed of Aakash and Vayu. It governs all the movement in the body like blinking of eyes, breathing, muscle movements etc.

When in balance controls mind, breathing, blood flow, heart function and ability to get rid of waste through intestines.
When out of balance can endure joint pain, constipation, dry skin, anxiety and other ailments.

  • Pitta - composed of Agni and Jala. It governs digestion, absorption, assimilation, nutrition, metabolism and body temperature.

When in balance controls digestion, skin colour and complexion, lustre of the eyes, vision and intelligence.
When out of balance can result in ulcers, inflammation, digestive problems, anger issues and heart burn.

  • Kapha - composed of Prithvi and Jala. It lubricates joints, moisturizes skin and maintains immunity.'

When in balance lubricates the joints, provides moisture to skin, helps to heal wounds, gives biological strength and supports memory retention.
When out of balance can result in obesity, diabetes, sinus problems, indigestion and increased risk of depression.

AYURVEDA - system of healing

Ayurveda practitioners spend quality time with the patient, building a relationship and thereby focusing on the person first and the disease or imbalances later.

A lot of care is then put into developing the most appropriate diet, daily routine, seasonal routine, exercise regimen, yoga and meditation practice, herbal medicines and more for each person. It is a personalized regimen for every person.

In ayurveda a human being is seen as an integrated whole, with not only a body and mind, but also a soul and five senses, which are like the five doorways through which we perceive the world around us.

If you visit a ayurvedic hospital or clinic, the ayurveda practitioner would dig deep into your daily routines and habits as a part of initial intake process, it will then help the practitioner to know about your lifestyle, dietary habits, constitutional imbalances etc. that are the underlying cause for your health problems.

Ayurveda practitioners have a big loaded toolbox of balanced dietary guidelines, exercise regimen, home remedies, seasonal routine plans, communication strategies and a lot more to treat our inner imbalances.

Investing time to learn a new tool for our personal health allows us to reclaim our health and sustain it. In the first place it will seem daunting to follow a routine equipped with discipline. But remember that your progress from imbalance towards balance is proportional to how well you stick to the diet and lifestyle plan.

Old habits sometimes die hard and your changes may be very gradual but to achieve progress, the changes need to be made.

At the end,you are in-charge of your own health and responsible for it too.
Ayurveda is just a path for you to follow!
